These historic trolleys are icons of San Francisco and carry many commuters and tourists around town every day on three different routes. Feel the wind rushing by, take in the colorful sights and neighborhoods, and stop at famed attractions like Nob Hill, Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square.

  • How many SF cable cars are there?

    There are 40 cable cars in San Francisco - 28 on the Powell lines and 12 on the California Street line. The historic cable cars are a great way to explore the city, and there are many stops along the way so you can get out and see the sights. Visit the Cable Car Museum and check out antique trolleys that have been extensive rebuilt dating back to 1888. You can also tour the historic Cable Car Barn & Powerhouse, where you can view the actual cable winding machinery from an elevated gallery.
  • Where can i ride the San Francisco cable cars?

The San Francisco cable cars operate on three routes: Powell/Hyde Street (board at Powell and Market or Beach and Hyde), Powell/Mason Street (board at Powell and Market or Taylor and Bay) and California Street (board at California and Drum or California and Van Ness). The cable cars run every day and you can buy tickets for $5 each way at the turnarounds or from the conductor as you board. Get a list of cable car stops and times at www.sfmta.com.
  • The Powell-Mason line runs up and over Nob Hill and down to Bay Street to end at Fisherman's Wharf.
  • The Powell-Hyde line runs over Nob and Russian hills before ending at Aquatic Park near Ghiradelli Square.
  • The California Street line runs east-west from the Financial District, through Chinatown, over Nob Hill and stops at Van Ness Avenue.
